Chaplin’s World, also colloquially referred to as the Charlie Chaplin Museum, is housed in Manoir de Ban in Corsier-sur-Vevey. The manor house itself is more than 1,000 meters2 large and is known for being Charlie Chaplin’s home from 1952 until 19771.

Visitors to Chaplin’s World can expect not only artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia from Charlie Chaplin’s life and career. Additionally, visitors will find a replica of Charlie Chaplin’s studio, allowing them to see what some of his most iconic films looked like as film sets. In addition to the exhibits and the studio, Chaplin’s World also features a cinema that screens Chaplin’s films, a restaurant that serves up delicious food and drinks, and a large garden.

Who is Charlie Chaplin?

Charlie Chaplin was an English actor and producer who worked in silent films. Having started working at an early age, he went on to have a long career spanning more than 75 years.

Charlie Chaplin is best remembered for his role as the Tramp on screen. The Tramp’s signature look, as shown in the film poster above, with his bowler hat, small mustache, and cane, has become synonymous with Charlie Chaplin himself.

As a result of the accusations of having communist tendencies, Charlie Chaplin was not allowed to return to the United States following a long career. He eventually settled in January 1953 at Manoir de Ban, a 14-hectare property in Corsier-sur-Vevey, where he lived until his death. Chaplin’s World is currently located in Manoir de Ban, where he used to live.

History of Chaplin’s World

The idea for Chaplin’s World started after Swiss architect Philippe Meylan and Quebecois Chaplin fan Yves Durand met. Together with a dedicated group of key players and the Charlie Chaplin Museum Foundation, the project to create a Charlie Chaplin Museum started coming to life.

After several years of feasibility studies, plans, work, design, consultation, and approval, work for Chaplin’s World began. It was a massive project that needed support not only from the key stakeholders but also from the local villages.

After more than a decade of planning and construction, Chaplin’s World opened to the public in April 20162. The museum has since become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Switzerland, drawing visitors from all over the world.

Currently, the museum is housed in the Manoir de Ban, a mansion that was once owned by Chaplin himself. It is the perfect location for a permanent museum dedicated to Chaplin’s life and career. The museum is located in Corsier-sur-Vevey, near Vevey, Montreux, and Lausanne.
