History of Lindenhof

A historic site located in the heart of Zurich, Lindenhof is on the hill with the same name. Although the history of Lindenhof dates back to the Roman era, you do not see nor feel it as much whenever you are there.

Nonetheless, Lindenhof used to be a fortified settlement. And if you want to really see the ancient historic walls, you can head to the Lindenhof Cellar (Lindenhof-Keller) at Lindenhof 4. The key to the Lindenhof cellar can be borrowed in the town hall against a valid ID (Stadhausquai 17, from Mondays to Fridays, 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM, Saturdays 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM)1.

Lindenhof is one of the oldest parts of Zurich, likely a previous Celtic settlement and a fort during the Roman times. During the Middle Ages, the hill was the site of a Carolingian and Ottonian palace2. Nowadays, the area is a public park and a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

One of the main reasons why Lindenhof is such a popular destination is its stunning panoramic views of Zurich’s Old Town, the Grossmünster Church, and the Limmat River. Behind, you can see the surrounding mountains of Zurich. The hill’s elevated position 20 meters above the Limmat provides an unobstructed view of the city3.

The view is especially spectacular during both sunrise and sunset, especially when the sky is painted with a combination of blue, orange, and pink hues. Visiting it during sunrise will be a quiet affair. Expect to see more people during the afternoon sunset, especially groups of friends spending time together and tourists snapping photos of the city.

Visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the hill’s perimeter. There is a low wall where you can sit and enjoy the views. There are also several benches located around the hill, particularly near the Linden trees. Especially during the hot summer months, it’s an ideal location to unwind and appreciate the scenery.

Lindenhof is also the perfect spot in Zurich for a picnic. You can bring a blanket and a basket of your favorite snacks here. And in case you don’t want to pack your own lunch, there are plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby where you can grab a bite.
