Zurich to Mürren Train: All You Need To Know

Coming from Zurich Airport

If you are coming from the Zurich Airport, take one of the next trains to the Zurich main station (Zurich HB). Several trains come every hour and stop in Zurich so just hop on the next train after buying a ticket from the ticketing office or one of the ticket machines.

As soon as you reach the Zurich Train Station (Zurich HB), check the big blue display boards in the middle.  You can find the train number and platform number on the station signs. Furthermore, the trains will be marked on the front and the sides with which route they are traveling. 

There are two ways to get to Mürren starting Lauterbrunnen. The first and easier trip is via Grütschalp cable car. The second is a longer route via the Stechelberg cable car. However, the second option does allow you to travel through the Lauterbrunnen Valley, see Staubbach Waterfall and Mürrenbachfall before continuing to Mürren.

In order to get to Mürren from Zurich, you’ll have to take the following trains:

  1. First, take the Intercity train from Zurich to Bern
  2. In Bern, take the Intercity train to Interlaken Ost
  3. In Interlaken Ost, take the regional train to Lauterbrunnen
  4. In Lauterbrunnen, follow the signs to transfer to the cable car heading to Grütschalp
  5. In Grütschalp, transfer to the small train that leads you to Mürren

How To Get From Zurich to Mürren via Stechelberg

  1. First, take the Intercity train from Zurich to Bern
  2. In Bern, take the Intercity train to Interlaken Ost
  3. In Interlaken Ost, take the regional train to Lauterbrunnen
  4. In Lauterbrunnen, transfer to the bus that goes in the direction of Stechelberg. At Stechelberg, Schilthornbahn, get off the bus.
  5. In Stechelberg, Schilthornbahn, transfer to the cable car that leads you to Gimmelwald.
  6. In Gimmelwald, you will take the connecting cable car to Mürren.

How do I get from Mürren to the Zurich Airport?

To go from Mürren to the Zurich Airport, you will have to take the following trains:

  1. From Mürren, take the connecting train to Grütschalp
  2. In Grütschalp, take the cable car down to Lauterbrunnen
  3. In Lauterbrunnen, take the regional train to Interlaken Ost
  4. In Interlaken Ost, take the Intercity train to Bern
  5. In Bern, take the Intercity train to Zurich
  6. In Zurich, take the next train to Zurich Airport (Zurich Flughafen)

How long does the train from Zurich Airport to Mürren take?

Despite the numerous train changes, the fastest train ride from Zurich Airport to Mürren via Grütschalp is 3 hours 10 minutes.

Via Stechelberg and Gimmelwald, the fastest train and cable car rides take 3 hours and 17 minutes.


Is the Train From Zurich to Mürren Scenic?

Of all the trains that you will take, it is definitely the last train that is the most scenic. I am talking about the ride from Grütschalp to Mürren. This is the most scenic.

Though the bus ride from Lauterbrunnen going to Stechelberg is going to be also scenic since the Lauterbrunnen Valley floor is gorgeous.

  • Golden Pass – The Golden Pass departs from Lucerne. You would take a train from Zurich to Lucerne, then change to Interlaken. This is sometimes referred to as the east end of this route. The Golden Pass has panorama coaches and is scenic.

  • Bernina Express – Bernina Express is another train route that begins in Chur. Chur is the oldest alpine city in Switzerland and definitely worth visiting. This train route spans 196 bridges. It goes through 55 tunnels and passes 20 beautiful villages in Switzerland. 
  • Historical Train Davos to Filisur – May through October, vintage carriages are pulled by the century-old crocodile locomotive from Davos Platz to Filisur. The train line covers a total length of 4,200 meters through 14 tunnels and 28 bridges. Its scenic highlights include the Wiesen Viaduct and the Zügen Gorge.
